My mother, Penne Fuertges, was a very gifted woman. She finished her MBA after giving birth to her second child and going back to school as a non-traditional student. She was a talented artist, had danced professionally for a ballet company, and she loved having a business career as much as raising her family. Penne was also incredibly fun to be with, and the most compassionate person I have ever known.
In the eighties she was an accredited financial-retirement planner and later on went to work for Aetna Insurance, until she retired in 2001. She died a year later, and never really had time to enjoy her retirement. But she loved her work.
Although my father, Don Fuertges, gave me my start in golf and competition, my mother...throughout her career taught me discipline and respect for work and helping others.
I was away at college--studying and playing golf when Money Magazine contacted her about featuring her in their January issue, 1983. When the magazine came out...it was funny to walk down the grocery aisle and see my parents smiling back at me.
They have both been gone for almost 10 years, and the photos taken for that issue are some of my favorite of my parents and brother.
